Family Tree Software

I debated on whether to break down and purchase some family tree software. There are many to download for free but do they really do the job.

I've downloaded Rootsweb's free tree software by it's parent company Myfamily. The layout was busy, it was slow, hard to navigate and I needed something that documented things well.

I moved on to the Family Tree Maker. It's one of the longer running programs on the market. I see it everywhere in the stores but the price kept me looking. I wasn't about to fork over a 'c' note for the program unless it also made me breakfast in bed. Onward and upward....

I sent out a few emails to others who have been researching longer than I. A cousin of mine in Florida quickly responded to my query and was adamant, hands down I needed to use Legacy Family Tree. She said she'd been through several tree programs, and liked this one the best especially when it came to sourcing work. Sources, big and small, are the foundation of any reliable family tree so I downloaded it from their website: Legacy Family Tree.

I love this program.

This was a free download and I paid less than $30 for the added bells and whistles, unlocked without a hitch with the purchased key code. I have to say it's the best investment I've made and my cousin was right, it out performed the other software I had been using. The formats made it easy to back up online and I have used it for the last 10 years.

Do check out other reviews here of the top ten best family tree software.

Happy hunting!

Hello, some time back in 2002 we were in touch with each other through the Ancestry message board for DK county KS board. Have you gotten around to re-typing the: "Early New Basel History" by Harvey Bross? I am still interested in a copy of it. Please let me know. I also use the Legacy Family Tree and think it is great! Thanks, Brenda Davis

brenda,

Hi! I am sorry for not getting back to you. 2002 was a while ago! I've even added baby number 4 since. hehe. I also lost email addresses in an email migration at Hotmail. You have to sign in once every 30 days over there or they wipe everything.

I stared the project and quickly abandoned it after finding it available online, already typed out. arg.

I quickly became aware of the errors in the publication (as I know there are at least in my family). I hope to get around to revising it someday.

Was there someone in particular that you were interested in? I've done so much more research in KS in the last 5 years.

When I was in the market for software, I did some research and everyone pointed towards Legacy. I bought it and have been very pleased with it but have no experience with other software to compare it too. My only complaint is in the merge function to merge duplicant ancestors. It seems very cumbersome and not that straight forward, especially when I want to merge a number of ancestors from one file into another but not everything. I ended up sorting, tagging, saving, importing and merging but it took awhile to do. Maybe that is just the joys of having a large ancestry tree.

Even as broke as I am, I might be tempted to download that. I am fascinated by family trees and don't know as much about mine as I should, beyond great grandparents. One of my cousins on my father's side was named after a captain in the revolutionary war who is a family ancestor. My father's side of the family owned the Queen Anne's parsonage in New York for a long time. Also on my father's side of the family, one great grandfather was a lieutenant in the Czar's army. Interesting stuff like that.
I don't have any blogs listed on my profile because there was this horrible creepy jerk that for the past year has been leaving awful comments and I'd finally had enough of him. But I'll give you the URL to my new blog if you ever want to visit. Since you're a friend of Ba Doozie and the Iguana, I think it will be ok!

Good luck with your geneology work.

Just saw your site and wished I'd seen your post before I purchased the new family tree maker (last week). I have the older version and wasn't even able to import my old files completely. I guess at least having to enter everything again keeps the info fresh in my mind.

Anyway, take it easy and thanks for this info. Good luck with the ladies at DAR!

I am a fellow genealogist too and a DAR member currently. Virginia is definitely enough to make even the most sane of us nuts. I hope that you have been able to find the proof you need. Good luck to you!
